Voices of Regeneration

Antonia Ablass
German

Antonia is a textile designer from Berlin and Brandenburg in Germany. Her textile work is influenced by the duality of growing up between the city and the countryside and it aims to bring together plants, humans and other living things. Early in her design studies, she began exploring the potential of textiles to re-weave nature into the built environment. Since then, she has been dedicated to deepening her understanding of plant physiology, wildlife and human-nature relationships. As an emerging artist, Antonia focuses on integrating plants into daily life with the conviction that reconnecting humans and nature can be healing to both us and our planet.

nature cape

Nature Cape is a three-meter-long, hand-knitted scarf with small plants growing on it: chia, wheat, linen, clover and psyllium. The piece is a commentary on a modern lifestyle that encourages us to grow far apart from nature.

For centuries, humans and their ancestors have evolved in the natural world, living in harmony with it. With the eruption of industrialisation and the exodus to the urban setting, humans broke away from this relationship, losing touch with the living environment and its nourishing force. What would happen if we could carry a piece of nature everywhere we go? Can it make us feel safer around hostile concrete structures? Nature Cape uses the healing effect of plants to create a delicate, yet protective shell against industrial distress. It is also an attempt to regenerate natural environments, creating new spaces for humans, plants and animals to coexist.
