Atunbi(Rebirth)

The painting “Atunbi (Rebirth)” beautifully intertwines themes of regeneration and transformation through its composition. An African figurine, dressed in a European robe, symbolises the blending of histories, cultures and identities, illustrating how regeneration often involves the merging of past and present to create something new.

The head full of flowers is a vivid metaphor for renewal and growth, representing the blossoming of new ideas and the flourishing of the human spirit after periods of transformation. In one hand, the figurine holds mushrooms, a natural symbol of regeneration due to their life cycles, which thrive in decay to create new life. This reinforces the idea that from endings or challenging circumstances, new beginnings can emerge, highlighting the cyclical nature of life. The ladybugs flying around the figure represent luck, protection and the guardianship that often accompanies the process of regeneration, suggesting a harmonious balance between nature and renewal.

“Atunbi (Rebirth)” portrays regeneration as both a personal and collective experience, where cultural and natural elements come together to reflect the journey of change, adaptation and growth. It invites viewers to see regeneration not just as a rebirth of form, but as a powerful act of transformation and creative evolution.
